The new RC9800i touch screen remote control was also showcased for access and control of information and digital content from multiple types of devices in the home. When accessing content from a PC, on-screen listings of pictures, music and movies are displayed on the screen for easy selection and content control. The RC9800i easily can be upgraded with new features via the Internet, making it a "future-proof" device. With an extensive infrared code database and built-in Wi-Fi technology, the Philips RC9800i can recognize more than 600 brands of consumer electronics devices. The RC9800i controls legacy and networked audio and video devices, so it is capable of replacing all existing remotes in the home. The remote can also provide updates for TV guides automatically via the Internet and allows users to access digital content from home PCs. A product within Philips' "Connected Planet" vision, the RC9800i acts as the main control center for the wireless family of products. The RC9800i uses UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) to provide content overview and control of UPnP devices in a network. The remote communicates with Philips' Digital Media Manager PC software, which is designed to organize multimedia content so users can see a list of all movies, music or photos stored on their PC on the RC9800i. Users can then play back content via any UPnP enabled device. For added convenience, the RC9800i features a quick and easy installation through an intelligent setup wizard, ensuring trouble-free installation. Users simply inform the device of what equipment they want to control and how the equipment is interconnected, and the RC9800i will create its own macros for turning on devices and selecting the right inputs. Yes - it works, yes it is missing some codes, yes some codes would not learn, yes it froze up a couple of times...but..I have a lot of gear in the theater and it works!
My wife can even turn the system on! It works with our projector, receiver, 400 dvd player all sony, cable box with DVR, Xbox 360, media center PC. Your can learn any codes into the many, many preset screen layouts and user functions.You program it by rooms and it works with all the stuff in our family room on different screens.
The wireless works, even with encryption and mac filtering. The program guide works and it very nice, it also has filters for movies, sports etc.
I can view pictures from our PC's from selected folders - it also watches folders for new pictures which I can view from the security cam's.
Overall you get your money's worth, you can even buy a couple for multiple rooms. I would try it, if you don't have the same good luck I had - return it.
OH - YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE DARK, THE HARD KEYS ARE ALSO BACKLIT!

This product works very well within its limits of customization. I have a projector and it requires you to press the power button twice to turn off, and the all off command for this unit only presses it once. So make sure you are aware of this limitation if you have a device with a similar configuration. Other than that it works great. I am able to access pictures and mp3's from the remote through the wi-fi. It is not a one hand operation though, but most remotes of this nature are made to be that. Battery life is a little lacking, but as long as you put it back on its charging station each night you should be fine.

This remote is awsome and is easy to set up as long as you take your time and think out your hook up and device input modes. visualize the interactions between your components and the steps necessary to activate the functions you want to create. Once it is set up it works fantasticaly well without setting up macros as the set up Wizard does it all.What ever you do ,do not contact customer support, I called twice and spoke to 2 different techs and they both told me to return the unit as it would not do the functions I was looking for and was not compatible with my equipment. I have no idea where the company finds these idiots who are unqualified to handle their calls and they are probably losing tons of business because of these so called techs who are totaly useless. If you are patient and take your time and think everyyhing out you will have no trouble settung up this remote. The screen is bright and easy to view and the keys light up and are very easy to see in a dark room and the layout is excellent. I highly reccomend this remote. Dan G
